Welcome to the June newsletter where we launch two new brands and several new products; we do updates on NIOD and The Ordinary, of course we do, and we take a look at sinus congestion, together with a product Shabir recommends to help clear blackheads. There is a treat from Margaret Dabbs and for the second month running another VH Addict has jumped on board and entered the inner sanctum, although quite honestly she has been ‘inner sanctum’ for several years. Additionally I jump onto The Podium because there are things that need to be said, and I’m going to say them. Let’s do it:

Spacemasks – Interstellar Relaxation 

I wrote about these on the VH Addicts Bulletin just under two weeks ago and the moment I did, I knew we would be in trouble, and we are. So please allow me to introduce you to Spacemasks, but please read the end bit carefully. Here we go:

The name! You see the thing is I only had to hear the name of the product and I knew I wanted it/them. I had no idea what it was, what it would do, or whether it/they would work. I needed them in my life. This has all happened really quickly, over four days to be precise. They arrived, in all their glory, on a Monday morning. Monday mornings are bedlam, the phones are going crazy, everything is going crazy, but who cares, before I turned my computer on I needed to test the product. I have to say I was slightly dubious because there are just two ingredients, essence of Jasmine and iron powder, but dubious only because of my frequently-written-about-essential-oil-allergy. But I went ahead and ripped the package open thinking ‘what the heck’ I walk around with heavy duty drugs in case of an ‘attack’.

To explain, Spacemask is a self-heating eye mask; it says on the package that it will transport you to another dimension (it does!) relieving tiredness, eye strain and other ‘earthly’ tensions. The warmth comes alive as soon as you open it, so you need to ensure that you are fully reclined and ready for lift-off! All you do is open the pouch, unfold your mask and gently place the Spacemask over your eyes and fit the loops around your ears. Within a couple of minutes it will heat up as the oxygen molecules in the atmosphere cuddle up to the mask’s iron particles in a natural heat exchange. Each mask will give you approximately 15 minutes of warmth (mine lasted longer) while your mind floats in space.

My experience – I think I floated beyond space. I put my feet on my desk, put the mask on and I was gone. We have an open-plan office and nobody saw me put it on, they were all too busy, and suddenly Jo (Customer Care Jo – many of you know her!) looks up and screams ‘what on earth are you doing’; Shabir burst out laughing (I couldn’t see his face, just as well) and I didn’t care. Pure bliss, 15 minutes of pure and utter bliss. I literally forced myself to take it off, but quite honestly I wish I’d kept it on for longer. In that moment an addiction started. I am making them compulsory for our Customer Care team because with everything that is going on currently, they need and deserve a 15 minute Spacemask event.

So my thanks to Harriet, founder of Spacemasks, for all the hilarious emails, phone calls and for loading her car up with stock and delivering them to me within 24 hours of our conversation; and there we were standing by her car killing ourselves laughing because we both knew what would happen when I released them to the Addicts, and it did. I virtually wiped her stock and in turn the Addicts virtually wiped our stock.

And then another conversation. Harriet: ‘OMG Gill what are we going to do, there are more (thousands upon thousands) Spacemasks on order, but I don’t know exactly when they are going to arrive’. I think you can guess my response; I am now the living expert on wait lists, trust me (or don’t as the case may be!), I will take my chances and write about them on this newsletter. I will probably end up getting bashed over the head if they are on pre-order (wait list) when this newsletter gets released, but I’m kind of used to that and you can’t keep a good product down.

Turmeric Oral Spray

I wrote on the last newsletter that curcumin/turmeric is the number one search term across all food and health searches and that it was of little surprise because although we have known about its benefits for the longest time, suddenly there are new turmeric products popping up all over the place. I also said we will sift our way through all the new products and then write about the best; last month we launched Organic Curcumin Latte and this month we launch Turmeric Oral Spray. I have been waiting for months to write about this, so with a big wave (and hug) to the Better You boys, who are calling this ‘a world first’ in oral sprays, let’s take a look:

Turmeric, and its component curcuminoids, is notoriously poorly absorbed within the gut with as little as 1% being absorbed into the body. For numerous reasons digestive inefficiency is on the increase and this innovative spray delivery system resolves the issue by avoiding the digestive process completely and delivering the product intra-orally, directly into the bloodstream.

Turmeric Oral Spray ensures a greater uptake of the three active curcuminoids with a scientifically proven method of coating the curcumin molecules, which dramatically enhances solubility and absorption. Kaomojibalms – Emoji Lip Balms

Wait! These are all over America, they are everywhere, squillions of people have them, they are kind of collectable and they are being gifted too because why wouldn’t you, they are ever-so-cute. So when I was asked whether I would like to launch them in the UK, I jumped up and down and said ‘twist my arm’ – it got twisted, and here they are.

The thing to say here is that I am so incredibly fussy, as many of you know, so I put the poor guy through the wringer and made numerous people test them before a declaration of love could be made. Unequivocally love is now declared.

We are launching with nine different Emoji designs in four different flavours, French Vanilla, Cherry Pom, Coconut Cream and Frosted Mint. Of course the packaging is the first thing you will look at, I did the same, but we have to go past that because if the lip balm was rubbish, then what is the point. It isn’t rubbish; it’s a fabulous lip balm.

The first ingredient listed is Squalane, it also contains vitamin E. Now you all know that I love Squalane and I’ll write more about it, in a rather surprising way, later in the newsletter. For now we say hello to Kaomojibalms; I was thinking of running a sweepstake so we could guess the most popular Emoji, but actually I haven’t got a clue, none of us do, so let’s see what happens and I’ll tell you on the next newsletter. The Wet Brush – A Stroke of Genius

I do so love a bit of synchronicity, it makes me happy. I always know ahead of time what I’m going to write about on each of the newsletters; I’ve said this many times, it is a ritualistic event; there are times when the words just fall onto the page, other times it can take me forever to write four lines, so when I saw Sarah Jossel (love her) had written about the Wet Brush in The Sunday Times Style magazine, I did a little dance of joy because I am using her words and I’ll wrap after that; this is what she wrote:

I know that so many of you are waiting for the next NIOD launch and you are really going to hate me for this, but as you have got this far down the newsletter, you will have realised there will not be a NIOD launch on this newsletter.

Our current wait lists across the DECIEM brands are simply horrid and we don’t want to add more burden and stress on all the people who are around us. Sure, if it was just me and Brandon, you would have had three or four more NIOD products by now, The Ordinary would be about six or seven products ahead of where we are now and we would have launched a new brand. But it isn’t just us, so please know that there is a time and place for all things and we are doing the very best we can under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.

Brandon and I have had long discussions about this; you all know it is going to be NIOD Sun (not its real name) and you all know that as Brandon adores creating new cutting-edge and pioneering products, I adore launching them. We promise we will launch it as soon as we can, but we have a duty to fulfil as many outstanding orders as we can, as quickly as we can before creating another stampede, and we know there will be one when you read what these (yes there is more than one NIOD Sun) can do.

At least we managed to launch the magnificent MMHC2 on last month’s newsletter, click here if you missed it; again there was a delay which was completely out of our control; some of you have already received it and all things being equal, we will be processing and sending out all outstanding orders within the next few days; I hope you love it as much as we do. In all the madness, the launch of MMHC2 has been slightly lost, but I just want to say thank you to Prudvi (NIOD’s lead chemist) for creating yet another stunning formulation. It’s pretty miraculous and I don’t use the ‘miracle’ word lightly.

The Podium

I have written about this subject, social media, many times and for those who haven’t been reading these newsletters for several years (why not!), I will tell you that a few years ago I took down all our social platforms in a fit of pique because I will not and cannot condone the bullying aspect of social media and how this is inexorably linked to a lack of self-worth and mental health.

About a year ago, I lost the longest battle with the entire team because of Instagram; we weren’t on IG and I couldn’t care less, but they cared, so I eventually gave in. I am well aware of the advantages from a business perspective, but as many view it as a competition to gain following, I don’t. It is there because it is there, I don’t care if we have the least number of followers in the beauty industry, because beauty becomes ugly when you watch people ‘buy’ their following. Why, to make them feel ‘more’, to make them feel ‘superior’, so others feel they are not ‘good enough’. It sucks.

And then about ten days ago a report was published rating IG as the worst social media platform when it comes to its impact on young people’s mental health. I would actually argue that it is not just young people; it has no bounds, across gender, across all age groups.

The Royal Society for Public Health study covered issues such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, bullying and body image, which are increasingly prevalent across users of social platforms and suggested that social media may be fuelling a mental health crisis. I don’t know how this can end, but somehow we have to hold hands and say ‘enough’. Bullies, by default or otherwise, are probably the most insecure of people, which I find sad.

Of course there are many wonderful things about social media, there are many good people doing fabulous things, but I am not writing about that here, I am writing about something that I feel passionately about, cyber-bullying, and I will step off The Podium after the next few paragraphs, which I feel compelled to write.

Most of you know the story of The Ordinary; we launched it on last September’s newsletter; nobody knew about it. Brandon and I had made that decision, there were no press releases, we just did it and as I’ve written before, we honestly didn’t know what would happen. We both held our breath, it sold out within hours of the newsletter being released and then almost instantaneously the bullying started.

Social media, mostly IG, went into full swing; of course there were the truly amazing comments, but they were drowned by an avalanche of hatred, directed to DECIEM, The Ordinary, me and Brandon. Both of us can take criticism, we learn from it, but this was all about slamming a brand without understanding the concept or even trying a product, but pretending that they had. And slam it they did, every which way we got it. We reached a point where we didn’t even recognise the brand, or specific products, because what was being said was so far removed the truth, it was completely unbelievable.

For the most part, we knew who the lead bullies were and quite honestly it wouldn’t have mattered what we had launched, when people have an agenda to try and bring you down, they will stop at nothing. Did it rock us, yes momentarily it did, you would have to be sub-human for it not to. But we had each other and my worry is for those who are alone when they are being targeted.

Bullying is an abhorrent crime against humanity and if you are being bullied, cyber or otherwise, I implore you to seek help or at the very least confide in somebody. The Samaritans would be a good place to start and you can reach them on 116 123; they provide emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress, despair or suicidal thoughts.

The Sunday Times Style Beauty Awards

I cannot even begin to tell you about the day, as the VH Addicts know, I was in a car crash on the way to the awards; I wasn’t driving but it was all about going the wrong way down a one-way street, brakes being slammed on with the realisation and then reversing into the biggest tree known to mankind. And I got the blame, that’s men for you, I wasn’t even driving and it was my fault. Of course, it brought back memories of when a certain person (ok my ex-husband) fell over skiing, broke his leg and blamed me. I was in London, he was in Switzerland, but it was my fault. Sure.

Anyway, back to it, I walked (actually staggered) into the room late crying hysterically (behind sunglasses) which transformed into a full-blown panic attack; luckily my rock Krish, otherwise known as Krishna Montgomery of Monty PR, had taken seats at the back of the room, so I could glide in without anybody noticing (India noticed, I know she did!). You have to love a girl who has a hot drink waiting for you and who holds your hand to try and stop the incessant shaking. But wait India was talking …… blur, blur, blur …..

Best Anti-Ageing Brand: The Ordinary. Yes! The Ordinary won and I think it was way ahead of the rest, which of course is an incredible achievement in such an overcrowded skincare market. So once again, Brandon, I suppose I will have to be nice to you and say many congratulations for creating a brand that has rocked the global market and we will continue to do so if we ever get through the wait lists. The irony, of course, is that The Ordinary and NIOD (poor little NIOD!) were up against each other and only one could win; in my head I would like to think that NIOD came second, but I don’t know that, so I shall just imagine it did and then everything will be fine.

You will also know that we were nominated for Best Retailer of the Year; I wrote at the time that it was a David and Goliath situation, I truly had no expectation because we were up against the multi-nationals. To be nominated in this category quite literally blew me away, I was not expecting it, but there we were and I thank each and every one of you who voted for The Ordinary, NIOD and us. So congratulations to John Lewis, I’m happy they won, there seems to be something very right about that. And of course thank you Style magazine and most especially India Knight and Sarah Jossel for trusting, for believing and for supporting the work that we do.

And now, The Ordinary, which I think many of you will want to read because it all gets wrapped up with our new columnist and it won’t surprise too many of you when I tell you it is Arly of Detail Oriented Beauty. Let the story unfold ….

The Ordinary and Detail Oriented Beauty

I have written about Arly several times, most recently on the last newsletter where I replicated a paragraph she had written about CAIS 5%, which she sent me when I was halfway through writing the newsletter. To recap, and in case you didn’t read last month’s newsletter, Arly is a long-term VH Addict, she is prolific on email and she is the girl who stayed up all through the night to write the first ever article on The Ordinary on the day we launched, which has become one of the most read articles on our site.

More than anything, I truly believe that people should recognize and nurture a gift; not everybody can write, but Arly can and she sits alongside our award-winning journalists with tremendous ease; she belongs and the depth of her knowledge astounds me. Perhaps the single most poignant part of this story is that NIOD made her do it. I have often written that NIOD, and now The Ordinary, changes lives and not always in the most obvious way. She was the girl who bought CAIS and was so blown away by it that a couple of months later she created her own space and in her own unique style, began to write about the products that mattered to her. And everything changed.

And then the epiphany. Arly had written a full-blown article about CAIS 5%, she sent it to me, I loaded it onto our site and almost simultaneously I sent Arly an email thanking her and asking if she would like to become a monthly contributor. Please don’t ask me why it took me so long to do this, but sometimes the most obvious things elude you. I did one of my ritualistic dances of happiness when she said yes. She does of course have her own platform, but I am deeply grateful and privileged that she now joins our platform, the platform where we tell it as it is; none of us can do this alone and we all have different voices; Arly writes …..

And it was very obvious where Arly would begin; The Ordinary – The Definitive Review. It is such a mammoth piece of work. I asked her if she wanted to chunk it up and run it over a few months, but she didn’t want to do that. So she started to write, she wrote as if her life depended on it; I didn’t brief her, I didn’t need to, the one and only thing I said to her was that I didn’t want a ‘puff piece’ because those articles aggravate me beyond and we don’t do fake love round here. I told her to tell it as it is. And she has.

So ‘The Definitive’ according to Arly. I haven’t edited it, I believe in freedom of speech as you all know. Where she doesn’t like a particular product, she says so, where she compares The Ordinary to other products, she has done so with complete authenticity in order to gain perspective. You may agree, you may disagree, but whatever your opinion it is a vastly intelligent read.

Some may read it in its entirety, others may read about the products they are interested it, but whatever, it is an incredible resource which we know will help so many of you who either use the products or want to begin using them. I can’t remember when we launched Ameliorate, there are times when I don’t even know what day it is, but launch it we did and it all started with just one product, which had been specifically formulated to help combat KP (Keratosis Pilaris), sometimes referred to as ‘chicken skin’. I love this product, I have always loved this product. We launched it approximately three (or was it four) years ago alongside Sheald and we all know what happened when Sheald launched. It remains one of our bestselling products and for good reason, it was the first-ever product that could be used on open wounds and is much acclaimed in medical circles for healing scars and wounds.

So Copper Firming Mist, we launched it as a stand-alone product and it was also included in the Sheald Post-Procedure & Recovery Kit. The thing is that as a stand-alone it launched as 120 ml and we wanted a travel size so we could take it on the plane with us. The explanation is really simple, a new set of EU Regulations came into force and because we are fully compliant, we have had to remove it from our site. Natural Remedies For The Relief of Sinus Congestion & Sinusitis

A very high percentage of people suffer from sinus congestion and blocked sinuses. The medical term for this is sinusitis and is a condition where the sinuses become infected or inflamed.

Sinuses are hollow spaces or cavities near the bones in the skull around the nasal passages. Each sinus has an opening that allows the change of mucus and air and the four sinuses are joined together by a thin membrane. Nearly two pints of fluid moves through the sinuses every day and helps to clean and moisten the membranes lining the nose and throat. Fine hairs in the sinuses ensure that the fluid does not get blocked with the sinuses. When the membrane joining the sinuses becomes infected or inflamed, the fluid simply accumulates causing pressure on the sinus walls, leading to pain in the region.

Sinus infections usually occur as a result of being infected by a virus or fungi. Fungal spores in the air are thought to be one of the most common causes of sinusitis as are pollen from winter and summer flowering shrubs and trees. There are over forty types of airborne fungal spores and sufferers of sinusitis were found to have an average of two within the sinus cavity.

The most common symptoms of sinusitis or sinus infections are pain in the head, ear or neck; headaches in the morning; pain in the jaw, cheeks and teeth; pain between the eyes; stuffy nose; loss of smell and tenderness around the nasal passages.

The most common treatment for sinusitis is the use of oral antibiotics, decongestant nasal sprays and pain killers, but there is a more natural approach, so I invite you to read Shabir’s in-depth article on Sinusitis.

Using Salicylic Acid for Blackheads

Blackheads can be difficult to get rid of and even with a good cleansing routine, these stubborn blemishes often remain. Even though they are stubborn, it is not difficult to get rid of blackheads or to reduce their occurrence. Salicylic acid is a very effective ingredient in treating skin prone to blackheads and open pores.

Blackheads can develop at any stage of life, but generally start from our teens during which time our hormones are usually out of balance. We start producing more androgens or hormones that stimulate oil production. These oils, along with dead skin cells, get clogged up in the pores where they get exposed to oxygen from the air, which turns them black and solid. The areas affected the most appear to be the oily areas of the face, mostly the nose, chin and cheeks.

Cold Sores Treatment

There are hundreds of cold sore treatment products on the market and it can be daunting to know which remedies really work to help treat cold sores. Cold sores are a condition caused by the infection of the herpes simplex virus. Nearly all of us have this virus in our bodies and it normally remains dormant where it resides in the sensory nerve cells near the site of infection.

The best way to both prevent and treat a cold sore is to take L-Lysine. Numerous studies indicate that lysine supplementation can help to speed the recovery from, and help prevent recurrences of cold sores. Lysine itself has anti-viral properties, but additionally it blocks the uptake of arginine, an amino acid that promotes viral growth.

Creams are very popular for cold sores treatment. Lemon Balm Cream is a soothing cold sore treatment cream. The tannins in lemon balm have potent anti-viral and anti-microbial properties, whilst terpenes in lemon balm help numb the painful tissue and provide soothing properties. Simply dab the cream at the first sign of any tingling and re-apply every three or four hours making sure that you wash your hands thoroughly between applications.

Colours by The Ordinary

The extraordinarily difficult circumstances surrounding the launch of Colours continues, so here is the latest update, but before I write this, I have been sending update emails, but many of you don’t appear to have received them. I think that many of these go into junk folders, together with email order confirmations and email dispatch confirmations, so may I suggest that you check your junk folder if you are waiting for something from us.

The current situation is that we are in the process of sending out as many orders as we can, but unlike most beauty companies, production of all DECIEM products is carried out in-house, so please bear with us, we are all doing the very best we can.

The other thing to say is that we are being bombarded with phone calls and emails because so many of you want to know where you are on the wait list. If we could give you that information, we absolutely would, but it is impossible because with 84 different products within Colours, fulfillment is dependent upon production, colour shade and several other factors.

We do not know ahead of time the products we will be receiving, so literally as soon as we receive a consignment, we work day and night to get these to you. I know it is not a good thing to keep you waiting so long, but who knew this would happen and I promise that if I need to do further updates, I absolutely will.

To wrap, every cloud has a silver lining, the people who have received the foundations absolutely love them; the comments have been truly amazing; we knew it was very special and if I write any more about them, the wait list will just grow longer and longer and we will be talking about delivery in 2018!

Two New Teas

Short and sweet. Two new teas. Rose Black Tea is a time-honoured floral Chinese tea. Traditionally it is called rose black congou tea. Layers of fresh rose petals are placed on top of layers of tea leaves. The tea and roses are dried together, with the roses imparting their scent and flavour to the tea. It can be enjoyed either hot or cold. Iced Rose Black Tea sounds rather fabulous. A straw and strawberries would work for me.

Lemon Ginger Tea combines the spicy taste of ginger and tart lemon; comforting and warming when it is cool and refreshing and invigorating when it is warm. Ginger has been used in China for many centuries and is regarded as a tonic for yang chi (energy). I can’t write any more or tell you that I love it because I don’t like ginger, so this will be for you, not for me. Oh and for the record I absolutely detest coriander. This has nothing to do with anything, but just thought I’d add that in.

Well, this section seems to have taken on a life all of its own and I don’t know what has happened to everybody this month, but it must be something they are drinking and trust me I don’t think it’s either of the above teas.

I have already written about Arly’s missive earlier in this newsletter, which now resides in the VH Addicts box on the front of our site, alongside Carole Morin. Well we are running out of boxes and until we get our shiny new website (sometime never I guess), this is how it has to be. Carole of course spotted Arly’s 5% article in the box within 20 seconds of us putting it there and emailed immediately to ask if Arly would come after her with a hatchet because she was worried people would think she had written it. Can you believe!

So let’s do Carole, the VH Addict with such a vivid imagination that she dreamt I was drowning in a cauldron of Squalane and then Brandon appears in the middle of everything, choking if you will on Sanskrit Saponins! This article should carry a warning and I truly mean it, if you are of a sensitive nature, please don’t read this and move on.

Darling Sal, it has been just over a year since she left us and there is barely a day when we don’t think of her. I could carry on and write about Photography Fluid being two years old this month, but I won’t, so all that remains is for me to thank each and every one of you for your continued loyalty and support, through some really difficult times.

Somewhere in this newsletter I wrote that none of us can do any of this on our own, and it is at times like this when, together with Shabir, I give thanks to the incredible team around us. I don’t do self-congratulatory stuff, it’s just not my style, but our customer care team, our processing team and our packing team have gone beyond the call of duty over the past few months and it is with the utmost respect that I thank them for their work ethic and dedication.

A personal thank you from me to all those who have held my hand and tried to keep me sane; I am not listing them here, but they know who they are and it would be remiss of me not to say thank you. In a world where certain values seem to have been thrown to the wall, those two small words ‘thank you’ are so very important and mean everything.  Thank you.
