January Newsletter 2015

January Newsletter 2015

Welcome to the January newsletter where the globe-trotting theme continues on from the December newsletter as we take a look at some pretty ground-breaking new products from Japan, America and other far-flung places. There are times when you don’t realise you need a product until you actually have it and once that happens you wonder how you ever lived without it. This is true of many of these products and I’m so excited to share them with you. Let’s go:

The Rainbow Volume S Brush

There are times when I get shivers down my spine by just looking at a product and this is exactly what happened when I found the Rainbow Volume S Brush. Before I had even tested it, I knew that it was revolutionary and I knew that it would dramatically change hair on a day to day basis, so I put it to the test and to say I was blown away is an understatement.

This ‘miracle’ hairbrush has been specifically designed to give you smooth, tangle free, voluminous hair in just a couple of brushes. The unique S shaped teeth create mini ‘air pockets’ to give overall volume and quite honestly your hair will look like you have just walked out a hair salon. I love how the brush looks, with all the colours of the rainbow, it’s like a throwback to childhood, with a mirror on the back. This innovative and patented brush is a world-first, is suitable for all hair types, is very gentle and will not break or damage hair, in other words it is pretty heroic.

I have ditched all my rather expensive hairbrushes and I just use the Rainbow Brush now. I dry my hair with it and it makes a huge difference, but the very best results are when you use it on dry hair – your eyes will probably pop out of your head! Just brush your hair from underneath and you get volume that stays all day (or night!) long. This is particularly fabulous if you have limp hair because it makes you look like you have loads of hair, but it is just as magnificent if you have thick hair – either way you get big, big hair in literally seconds.

Just to say that the first night I tested it, I tipped my head upside down, brushed my hair and went to bed. I nearly had a heart attack (of the good kind) the following morning; I had 60’s hair and I was Cilla Black, Kathy Kirby and Dusty Springfield all rolled into one – the bouffant had made an overnight comeback! Shabir of course is busy rolling his eyes in despair as a lot of my friends have tried my brush and then promptly stolen it. Each of them want to buy an entire stash to share with their friends, but I’ve told them they have to wait and stand in line, which is just as well because when we released it to the VH Addicts a couple of weeks ago it went way beyond wild and the feedback has been pretty astounding.

As it stands right now, we have just received our second consignment, several beauty editors have sworn their allegiance to it and Jo Fairley told me it was the most amazing hairbrush she has ever used in her entire life! I have two brushes; I keep one in my bathroom and I carry one in my handbag just because a girl has to do what a girl has to do.
Rainbow Volume S Brush £12

If I’m being honest, it’s the name of this product that I was initially drawn to, but once I stuck my finger in the pot and tested it on my hand, I was hooked; when I used it to remove my make-up I nearly died and went to heaven because I had discovered skincare nirvana. This melts away your daily dose of grime, dirt and all traces of make-up instantly. It dissolves foundation and even the most resilient waterproof make-up thoroughly and leaves your skin clean and luminously radiant. The pink balm type texture responds to body temperature and melts into a silky liquid that deep cleanses and rinses off completely without drying or stripping your skin.

Loaded with hydrating ingredients such as aloe vera and calendula flower extract, it also includes papaya to help dissolve dead skin cells and acerola, a powerful antioxidant that helps brighten your complexion and visually improves uneven skin tone. To use, just take a small amount (less is more) of the balm and apply on a dry face. Massage your face in a circular motion and as if by magic, the balm transforms into an oil, which I personally adore. Rinse well with warm water and if you wish, you can then use your usual cleanser – I do!

I know that I wrote about the MakeUp Eraser on the last newsletter, but there are times when two products come along in the same category and because of their brilliance I have to write about both. I use both products, just because I can, and primarily I take my eye make-up off with the MakeUp Eraser and then do a quick swipe with the eraser before using Dizzolv’It. I said at the beginning of this newsletter that you often don’t realise you need a product until you have it and this is so true of Dizzolv’It. If somebody took this away from me now, I would cry, well you know what I mean. I get ever so emotional about products, most especially when they are pioneering and cutting-edge. Dizzolv’It sits in both categories and in my bathroom, obviously!

O! Wow Brush

On the packaging of this product, it is written ‘simply put, this brush is an awe-inspiring wow inducing miracle’ and I fully endorse that statement. Two brushes on one newsletter, but this is a make-up brush and through its velvet like bristles and densely packed ultra-fine fibres, this amazing brush is made to ensure an airbrushed effect, with an immaculate streak free touch. The brush features an oval and angular surface that is crafted to blend liquid, cream or powder seamlessly into your skin.

It’s so easy to use, just pick your choice of product and then start applying the make-up from the centre of the face using the brush; glide the brush across the surface of the skin to blend and finish off with light, circular motions and voila, your skin will look like a professional make-up artist has been at work.

As with the above two products, the O! Wow brush was released to the VH Addicts a couple of weeks ago and the response and feedback has been pretty unanimous; every girl should have one of these in their make-up bag. This from an Addict with the heading ‘Pinch Me’:

‘Oh good lord …. How AMAZING is the O! Wow Brush. It is the best thing for applying foundation EVER!! Absolutely LOVE IT! (Dances round kitchen)’

The O! Wow brush is also a brilliant tool for scarred skin, which I know is a huge concern for so many people. Literally just follow the instructions above, without overdoing it, and it will really, really help in camouflaging skin imperfections.

Just to wrap, a certain unnamed beauty editor called to tell me that the O! Wow brush was so phenomenal that I had to ensure that every beauty editor had one so they could, in turn, tell the world about it. So a big wave to beauty editors everywhere, but that aside, do join me and the VH Addicts as we hold up our brushes and do the dance of all dances around our kitchens and bathrooms in celebration of niche, innovative products! Viva, Viva, Viva!

Hyaluronic Body Mist

I hardly need to tell most of you about my ongoing love affair with Hyaluronic Acid (HA); I have been writing about it for over twelve years and Shabir and I both believe that HA is the most crucial of anti-ageing supplementation. It is pretty powerful when used in topical products too, provided the formulation and the molecular weight ensures penetration and efficacy and that’s really important because all HA products are not created equally – far from it.

When I was asked if I would like to launch Hyaluronic Body Mist in the UK, I was all over it like a rash, or rather it was all over me, without the rash, which means that if you have super-sensitive skin, like me, you can still use it. When researching and testing the mist, the one thing that jumped out at me is that the product claims to maintain hydration for 72 hours and put to the test, it lives up to this claim, which is why I am writing about it and you need to know about it!

This light and refreshing mist hydrates below and on the surface of the skin with low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid in a base of hydrating plant D-glucose. The ‘next generation’, non-aerosol continuous mist makes it really easy to cover the entire body and it absorbs instantly, delivering immediate and longer-term hydration.

Bottom line, get this on your skin right now; it really makes a difference as I believe that skin needs to be hydrated all year round, not just in the warmer months when we start to expose our arms and legs. Also a little goes a long way, so I’m guessing this mist will see us through January and February, which is all rather fabulous in my book!
Hyaluronic Body Mist by Hand Chemistry £17 for 150 ml

Intense Youth Complex

Having just launched Hyaluronic Body Mist for Hand Chemistry, I am now going to tell you about two more of the products in the range, each of which are pretty extraordinary in their own right.

We will begin with the award-winning Intense Youth Complex, a hand cream that is so utterly brilliant, I was pretty stunned when I started to use it. This concentrated multi-functional hand cream targets eight signs of hand ageing simultaneously and the 19.5% active complex concentration visibly improves firmness, elasticity, density, evenness, brightness, texture, smoothness and hydration.

It is recommended that you use this hand cream every morning and evening and that if you follow this recommendation, you will see visible results in eleven days or less; from my experience it was less, I actually saw an immediate improvement and with huge apologies to all other hand creams in the world, this is one of the best hand creams I have ever tested and used. Nothing to add to that really, except seeing is believing, so when you see, you will believe and if you thought it was impossible to turn back the years on your hands, think again!
Intense Youth Complex by Hand Chemistry £19 for 100 ml

The mission of Hand Chemistry is to introduce ‘next generation’ products to the world of beauty and their Retinoid Complex is founded upon innovation in Vitamin A technology. The Retin Oil Complex is a multi-vitamin dry body oil, which helps target scars, stretch marks, ageing dehydrated skin, surface irregularities and discolouration, to show a difference to the skin’s surface in a short space of time.

This super dry oil formula will help skin look smoother and visibly helps reduces pore size and deep lines, without causing irritation. The formulation includes Vitamin C and a unique blend of skin enhancing Amazonian oils, which leave a dry protective barrier on the skin’s surface. An oil-derived Deep Sea Algae Complex targets stretch marks and over time you will see a general improvement in the condition and texture of skin. Apply as needed on body areas and you can check out all the other wonderful products from Hand Chemistry below – love this brand!
Retin Oil by Hand Chemistry £20 for 100 ml; Hand Chemistry Products

Right, that’s the first round of new products, but there are more new and fabulous products to come together with the resurrection of a product, but first we are going to take a look at some health concerns:

Winter SOS Survival Guide

Many of us will experience bouts of cold, flu-type symptoms and infections during the winter months and most of us will blame bugs as the cause of illness rather than a compromised immune system. The immune system is unlike any other bodily system in that it involves the complex interaction between physical structures, such as the thymus gland, as well as complex interactions between hormones and chemical substances in the bloodstream.

Colds and influenza are caused by a wide variety of viruses and yet there are differences between these infections. The symptoms of a common cold include runny nose, congestion, cough and a sore throat; the symptoms of flu tend to be far more severe as the virus is capable of infecting the lungs, affecting joints, causing pain, and causing respiratory problems.

In his article on immunity, Shabir takes a look at what causes a weakened immune system and offers some general advice, which is safe and easy to follow. He particularly recommends taking Daily Immunity, a cutting-edge supplement that contains herbs, vitamins, minerals and probiotics, all know for their varying roles in supporting the immune system. This supplement can be taken to help prevent colds and infections and it may also help shorten the duration of an infection, which is a very good thing.
VH Editorial: Winter SOS Survival GuideDaily Immunity £25 for 60 Capsules

Sleep Loss

Following on from the above, one cause of having a compromised immune system is lack of sleep, which in turn has many causes, including stress. According to a study carried out by the University of Pennsylvania, participants who were limited to four and a half hours sleep per night for one week reported feeling more stressed and mentally exhausted than getting eight hours sleep. This, of course, makes total sense, but there are millions of people who suffer from sleep deprivation and it’s really not cute.

Earlier this year we launched a natural supplement to help support the quality of sleep and the feedback we have received has been pretty impressive. Cherry Night contains a high strength extract of Morello cherries, which are a type of sour cherry known for their nerve calming properties and the extracts are naturally rich in melatonin, the sleep hormone.

It is often the case that two different supplements work synergistically giving optimum results. High Five B Complex with Magnesium Ascorbate helps contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue by supporting normal energy yielding metabolism and also supports the normal function of the immune system.

We want you to sleep and so for the duration of this newsletter, with every Cherry Night ordered we will pop in the High Five B Complex, worth £6.75, as a gift. The first step is to help regulate your sleep pattern and we believe these two supplements will help you tremendously.
Cherry Night by Viridian £24.95 for 150 grams (includes High Five B Complex with Magnesium Ascorbate worth £6.75)

Leg Ulcers

Ulcers are breaks in the skin that fail to heal by themselves and may be accompanied by inflammation. Ulcers can occur anywhere on the body, but we are going to focus on foot and leg ulcers.

A foot ulcer is an open sore on the foot that looks like a red crater on the skin; a leg ulcer can be shallow and only just break through the surface of the skin, or it can be very deep, extending through the full thickness of skin exposing tendons and bones. If ulcers are not treated quickly, they can get infected with serious consequences, such as an abscess that may spread through the skin and into the bone, leading to gangrene or the death of the tissue.

Some of the common causes for leg ulcers include circulatory problems, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) and foot abnormalities.

You can read Shabir’s in-depth article on leg ulcers, but the bottom line here is that he recommends the use of Manuka Honey for its multiple benefits in healing leg ulcers. There are many published scientific research papers showing the positive healing effect of medical grade Manuka Honey on leg ulcers, bedsores and hard to heal wounds. Collectively research has shown that Manuka Honey inhibits more than 80 species of bacteria, particularly those that are found in hard to heal wounds.

It is important to realise that the research is based on ‘medical grade’ Manuka Honey for topical use and not the jars of Manuka Honey that are widely available in stores. We recommend Meloderm Manuka Honey UMF 15+, which has been sterilized with gamma irradiation, not heat, for use on wounds, leg ulcers, bedsores and burns.

Yeast Assist Kit

The Yeast Assist Kit is a complete system that targets yeast infections, candida infections and vaginal discomfort. Soaps, detergents and even normal hormonal changes to the monthly cycle can all throw off the delicate vaginal balance resulting in infections that are so common. This kit features targeted probiotics, botanicals and herbal extracts researched extensively for their ability to help support natural balance and comfort.

Each Yeast Assist Kit contains the Yeast Assist Probiotic Formula, the Yeast Assist Cream and a 16 page guide to vaginal health. The probiotic combines 1 billion live microorganisms of targeted probiotic plus supportive plant compounds and it features Bacillus Coagulans, a shelf-stable probiotic strain, which means it is not necessary to refrigerate.

The Yeast Assist Cream is a topical cream for external vaginal comfort. This soothing, pH-balanced cream contains nine key botanicals and herbal extracts including St John’s Wort, Thyme, Calendula and Tea Tree Oil, in a gentle base of Aloe, Jojoba and Olive Oils. Vaginal balance is a delicate matter and the Yeast Assist Cream can also be used for external vaginal discomfort due to itching or irritation. If you do not wish to use both products, they can be bought separately as below.

UrbanLab describe themselves as a functional skincare brand giving specific and immediate solutions to various skin concerns for urban city dwellers of the 21st century in an immediate and effective way. Now you obviously don’t need to be a city dweller to use these products because I think they are clever, contemporary and tremendously effective, which is all I really care about.

So please allow me to introduce you to this brand, who specializes in mask technology, with three different sets of face masks, one for angry skin, one for anti-ageing and one for ultra-moisture. Each set has five different masks, one for each day of the week (well, a five day week!) and they should be used consecutively, which is rather clever as each mask is different and will protect skin from environmental factors for 24 hours:

Day One: Soothing, Moisture and Cooling: Chamomile and Lemon Grass moisturize and calm irritated skin.
Day Two: Exfoliation and Skin Texture: Papaya helps exfoliate old dead skin cells and clogged pores to help prevent skin irritation.

Day Five: Skin Brightening and Hydration: Adds a protective moisture veil on skin to leave silky, soft and supple.

Directions: After cleansing your face, open pouch and take out the two pieces of masks. Gently place them onto your face, fitting around the eyes and mouth. After 10-20 minutes, remove the masks and gently pat any remaining essence to soak into the skin.

Moisture Lip Mask

I mentioned above that UrbanLab specialize in mask technology and they have come up trumps with their moisture lip mask. It nourishes and improves the definition around the lips by repairing, plumping and smoothing lips, while gently and mildly exfoliating dead skin cells around the delicate lip area. I’m not really sure how this works, but it does work and it is rather fabulous.

All you need do is place the lip mask onto clean lips and leave for 10-20 minutes (I leave mine on for 20 minutes). Remove the mask, massage the remaining essence into your lips and voila, fabulous lips!
Moisture Lip Mask £5

Nail Mask Twinkle Star

I have written about a few products recently with weird names and I’m guessing that the ‘Twinkle Star’ refers to shiny nails, but who knows! What I do know is that there are times when we seriously have to ignore the packaging (yes, it’s pretty dire) and concentrate on the product, so that’s exactly what we will do.

These individual nail care masks come loaded with an intensive natural and nourishing solution inside each flexible thimble-like mask, which are made of a highly elastic waterproof fabric. With concentrated essential oils, milk protein and beeswax, these little thimbles sit on each finger and thumb and help to strengthen nails, soften cuticles and will leave your nails buffed and shiny.

All you do is cut the nail mask sheets, place on each finger and thumb and keep them on for approximately 20 minutes. I tested these out on a group of friends as we were sitting around a table; they all laughed at me and said that the product was bonkers; twenty minutes later they were all eating humble pie and were raving about the results. Not so bonkers after all, just another amazing, innovative product that you can use weekly if you wish to keep your nails and cuticles in peak condition.
Nail Mask Twinkle Star £3.50

The Resurrection – Pommade Divine

Pommade Divine (Nature’s Healing Balm) is a unique formula made from a blend of essential oils, known to heal, soothe and repair dry and damaged skin. The original formula was first made by the Royal Family’s chemist, Butler’s & Co in 1800. Since that time, this multi-purpose healing remedy took care of families all over Britain and the former British Empire.

It disappeared a few years ago, but now it is back and its antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties helps to promote instant soothing relief for minor skin injuries including bruises, grazes and scalds. Welcome back Pommade Divine!
Pommade Divine £19.80 for 50 ml

Magnificent Magnesium

Over the past few months, we have launched several new magnesium products and as I have written before, the ongoing love affair with all things magnesium continues as we launch two new magnesium products.

The current surge began when we released Magnesium Body Wash, a magnesium-based shower gel that gently cleanses and nourishes. Highly concentrated with magnesium chloride, which is mined deep under the earth’s surface, this body wash is blended with natural gentle ingredients to help soften and moisturize your skin. It also helps to correct magnesium deficiencies, which is a very good thing as most of us are magnesium deficient.
Magnesium Body Wash £9.95 for 473 ml

We followed through with the launch of Magnesium Lotion, the companion product to the Body Wash and trust me, it is just as wonderful. Particularly beneficial for sensitive skin, it works to help calm and encourage the healing of inflammatory skin concerns such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. It enhances cellular energy for effective regeneration of cell tissues and is suitable for all skin types, including very dry skin.
Magnesium Body Lotion £9.95 for 240 ml

Here comes the soap! If you prefer using soap to a body wash, then you will love this new Magnesium Soap loaded with magnesium chloride. This highly concentrated soap is also formulated with coconut and avocado oil, is suitable for all skin types and should be used daily. My recommendation, use the Magnesium Body Wash in the shower and the Magnesium Soap in the bath, or both together, whatever your mood dictates – I’m all for magnesium overload!
Magnesium Soap £5 for 121 grams

The topical application of Magnesium has shown it to have an absorption rate of approximately five times faster than if taken orally. One of the signs of magnesium deficiency is if your skin turns red when using a Magnesium Spray; this is perfectly normal, but there are people who are super-sensitive to a transdermal mineral spray and so Better You have formulated Magnesium Oil Sensitive Spray, specifically for those with ultra-sensitive skin and children. Containing up to 800 sprays, it helps relieve muscle tension and is really great to use on conditions such as Restless Leg Syndrome. Start spraying!
Magnesium Oil Sensitive Spray £12.20 for 100 ml

Hairjelly Protein Capsules for Hair Loss

Historically, it was always considered that consuming gelatin would help strengthen weak, fragile hair and nails. There is some justification to this as there have been several studies on gelatin consumption and its benefits to help prevent hair loss. One such study was published by Dr Zeev Pam at the Annual Meeting of the European Hair Research Society where he concludes that gelatin in conjunction with other supplements, such as saw palmetto berry, may be effective in treating hair loss.

Before you all start eating cubes of jelly (yet another throwback to childhood!) nearly all brands of jelly are now made from a vegetarian substitute and are therefore a poor source of the natural protein and amino acids found in animal gelatin. Animal gelatin is rich in ‘sulphur-rich’ amino acids that help encourage healthy hair and nail growth, but a new supplement has been released that mimics the amino acids found in animal gelatin, called Hairjelly Protein Capsules.

Hairjelly Protein Capsules are 100% vegetarian and may be used as an adjunct treatment to Superior Hair (see below) and the Phylia de M Three Step Kit, which is based on the philosophy, science and life’s work of a Japanese oncologist who drew upon his experience in science and medicine to create a revolutionary recipe for cell and nerve regeneration.
VH Editorial: Gelatin Capsules for Hair LossHairjelly Capsules £29.95 for 60 Capsules; Phylia de M Three Step Kit £103

Superior Hair is targeted for all forms of hair loss, but it is particularly effective for women with thinning hair, or hair loss, as a result of going through the menopause. Hair loss as a result of the menopause, and post-menopause, is thought to arise due to the deficiency of female hormones, which leads to the dominance of the male hormone, testosterone, in the bloodstream. Since the body works within very finite levels of all hormones, this excess testosterone is converted into a compound that inflames the scalp, which results in disturbed signals for keratin production. Additionally, underlying inflammation of the scalp also results in poor nutrient availability to the hair follicles cause them to be malnourished.
Superior Hair £26 for 90 Capsules

The Chilblains Regimen

We are now going to take a look at the cause of chilblains together with a treatment regimen recommended by Shabir, so here is the lowdown:

Chilblains, more common in women than men, are a relatively common concern almost exclusively confined to colder climates and countries. They are a painful reaction to cold weather that commonly occurs in the toes, although they can also affect the rest of the foot, fingers, the nose and ears.

Chilblains, also known as ‘perniosis’, are unusual reactions of the small blood vessels, called capillaries, within the skin. Chilblains look like small red bumps on the toes and fingers and are often very itchy and painful. The cold weather causes the capillaries to constrict and when the area warms up again, the capillaries are not able to open up quickly, resulting in the stagnation of blood and all the waste products within it. It is these waste products that accumulate in skin and set off an inflammatory reaction that can be painful.

Initially the inflammatory reaction causes redness of the skin, but with constant exposure these can turn into a bluish-black appearance and often the skin may break open. The healing of skin can take several weeks and often, due to the cold weather, chilblains can keep recurring.

Poor circulation increases the chances of getting chilblains, but this concern is not the only causal factor as young people with good circulation can also get chilblains. It is a combination of poor circulation, fragile capillaries, genetics and other causes that are not yet fully understood. However, enhancing circulation often helps to prevent chilblains and also encourages quicker healing of the inflamed tissues.

To prevent and treat chilblains, we tend to recommend the use of Diosmin Plus, a potent but safe circulation enhancing supplement. Diosmin Plus is used to help treat varicose veins, spider veins, haemorrhoids and other circulatory problems, with great effect. This supplement is a blend of synergistic botanicals that help to maintain adequate blood flow and also helps to strengthen the capillaries as well as the valves within arteries and veins, ensuring the capillaries do not constrict. This often helps to prevent chilblains.
Diosmin Plus £25.50 for 60 Capsules

Topically, we recommend Capsicum and Ginger Warming Cream, to be used morning and evening. Capsicum, also known as red or chilli pepper, has a history of usage as a medicinal plant. Capsicum has been scientifically studied and when applied topically, it has been found to help alleviate the pain of arthritis, shingles, neuropathy and fibromyalgia.

The combination of capsicum and ginger will also help to alleviate pain, encourage quicker healing and ensure that the area is kept warm over a few hours, minimizing the appearance of chilblains. This cream can be used to both help prevent and treat chilblains.
VH Editorial: Chilblains TreatmentCapsicum and Ginger Warming Cream £8.50 for 100 ml

News and Feedback

Before anything, I would just like to say a great big thank you for all the kind messages, phone calls and emails after the release of the December newsletter; your feedback on the new product releases has been pretty sensational, which of course makes me very happy, so a great big shout-out to the MakeUp Eraser, the Clear Nose Set (extracting blackheads and grime magnificently), the rather exquisite Shabon Roller Cleansing Bar and on and on – too many to mention here!

Inevitably, life does not always run as smoothly as I would hope and we hit problems with the supply of quite a few products, including Sage Complex and Superior Joints. On supplements, it is nearly always a raw ingredient issue, which in turn affects the manufacturing process. The next problem hits in when we are given inaccurate dates for delivery, which we pass on with good faith and they then turn out to be incorrect. With all the best will in the world, my hands are often tied behind my back and there is nothing I can do. Both supplements are now back in stock, so I’m sorry if you had to wait, but at least we got Sage Complex out before Christmas, hopefully helping to avert any major mood swings!

VH Editorial

I have already mentioned all the health editorials throughout the newsletter, but in addition, Jo Fairley takes a look at creating a home yoga space, Catherine Turner reveals the good morning routine, Cheryl Thallon of Viridian Nutrition takes a respectful examination of the life and health of Audrey Hepburn and the Beauty Bible girls write about combination skin. Enjoy the articles!
