February Newsletter

February Newsletter

Welcome to the February newsletter where we release more new products from Inhibitif and The Ordinary, there are also launches from iS Clinical and Sarah Chapman and we reveal the next supplement in the amazing Florassist collection. We will also be taking a look at gut health, there is a section on eye health and then we do news and feedback where I have a few things to talk to you about. On with it:

We launched the third generation of Inhibitif on the January newsletter. Because these products are specifically focused on reducing the apparent quality, thickness, density and speed of unwanted hair regrowth, we knew that a range of products formulated to help minimise the need for frequent hair removal and the recurrence of ingrown hair would be important. Unwanted facial and body hair is a massive concern for so many, so two things here. The first is an email I received, which I am replicating in full, which really says it all and I have nothing to add; underneath I will write about a new addition to the Inhibitif range. When I wrote about this on the most recent Addicts Bulletin, the orders started flooding in, so let’s go:

‘There is something very strange about Inhibitif Face Serum – it actually works! On second thoughts, it comes from DECIEM so I shouldn’t be surprised – the products always do exactly what they say on the tin. After years of waxing, plucking and generally pulling at hairs on my upper lip (and beyond that area post menopause) I had been left with some small lumps with ingrowing hairs – not very attractive! Nothing has worked on this problem until Inhibitif – as if by magic they have all completely disappeared along with the odd rogue long hair that would suddenly appear overnight. I think this product is a miracle!’

We think so too, so let’s talk about the new product, third generation Inhibitif again, please allow me to introduce you to the Inhibitif Deodorant. As with the other three products, the deodorant contains high concentrations of multiple actives to minimise the need for hair removal under the arms, whilst fighting odour with two technologies, without salt, aluminium or talc, aside from the fragrance.

With daily use, the need to shave or wax will be reduced dramatically and you should see visible results from two weeks. It also helps reduce irritation and redness, it is suitable for all skin types and as an added bonus it targets ingrown hairs. Bravo for the third generation of the entire range; it just does it and stands alone in the ‘unwanted hair’ category, which of course really matters.
Face Serum £17 for 30 ml; Intimate Care £9 for 60 ml; Body Serum £30 for 240 ml; Deodorant £9 for 50 ml

The Ordinary

The life and times plus three new products:

Many of you will have read on the last newsletter that Wayne Goss had filmed a video about the two Ordinary Primers, High Adherence Silicone Primer and High-Spreadability Fluid Primer, but I wouldn’t let him release it until I was happy with our stock levels. So it went something like this, he posted the video on YouTube two weeks ago; within 90 seconds our website fell down, I started to scream at Shabir (like it was his fault – of course it wasn’t) and although it didn’t take that long to get the site functioning again, it felt like forever and a day and then the orders came rolling in; tens of thousands of them and I knew the inevitable was about to happen – again.

Please trust me when I tell you that however prepared you think you are, based on past experience, there are always those moments when you just stare at your screen in total disbelief. This was one of those moments.

I am not going into detail here, otherwise I will be writing forever; the current situation is that the High-Spreadability Fluid Primer is currently in stock (this is the one I will not live without), but the High Adherence Silicon Primer is out of stock. This is absolutely not written in stone, but we think it will go back into production around the third week of February, at which time we will of course process and send out all back orders.

All I am going to do here is to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Wayne for the ongoing love and support; you can watch the indomitable (and outrageous) Wayne Goss here.
High Adherence Silicon Primer £3.90; High-Spreadability Fluid Primer £5.50

So here we go, three new Ordinary products to tell you about, which we anticipate releasing within the next three-four days. After the above, it was debatable whether or not we would actually release them this month because of the backlog of orders, but after many hours on the phone (time zone trauma hits in again), Brandon and I decided we actually had to, otherwise it would have disrupted the ongoing schedule of new product releases, including Colours, and neither of us are up for being crucified right now.

Argireline Solution 10%

Arigreline is a trademark owned by Barcelona-based Lipotec. It is a proprietary solution of Acetyl Hexapeptide-3. Controlled studies have shown that Argireline improves the appearance of facial areas prone to developing dynamic folds, including around the eyes and on the forehead area.

Please also note that studies have shown that the water content of formulations does impact the utility level of topical Argireline and specifically that higher water content results in better utility. This formulation is water-based and avoids oils, esters and silicones.

Argireline can be found in many high-end skin formulations, but we decided to release a neat version, which can be used on the forehead and around the eye area before heavier treatments. Wayne has announced to me that he can’t wait to get this on his skin. I think I know what that may mean. Perhaps I should emigrate – permanently and take him with me!
Argireline Solution 10% £5.50 for 30 ml

100% Plant-Derived Squalane

Squalane is a saturated and stable hydrocarbon that is found naturally in the skin. It has very high emollience, is an exceptional hydrator and can prevent ongoing loss of hydration that impairs dermal suppleness. Squalane is non-comedogenic and is suitable for use on all skin types. It can also be applied to hair to increase heat protection, add shine and reduce breakage potential. This product uses 100% pure plant-derived Squalane that is ECOCERT approved and is a USDA Certified Bio-based Product.
100% Plant-Derived Squalane £5.50 for 30 ml

Alpha Lipoic Acid 5%

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a highly potent antioxidant and can restore a renewed skin appearance, improving visible skin texture when applied topically. This formulation uses an exceptionally high 5% concentration of high-purity Alpha Lipoic Acid, so please note the following:

  1. Alpha Lipoic Acid is highly sensitive to sunlight. Please do not expose to direct sunlight. Application to face is recommended at night-time only.
  1. Alpha Lipoic Acid is less stable in formulations that contain water and use of formulations of ALA containing water is highly discouraged. This formulation is water-free and may feel slightly “oily” for a few seconds after application.
  1. This formulation contains an extremely high concentration of ALA. Daily use is not recommended since such a high frequency of use can cause skin sensitivity. Please therefore use two-three drops only, two-three times a week. Less is more.

Alpha Lipoic Acid 5% £5.90 for 30 ml

Florassist Throat Health

Florassist Mood came first; Florassist Oral Hygiene followed and now we release Florassist Throat Health. Before I write about this product I just need to say that we have received so much positive feedback on the first two products. Florassist Mood has gone all over the press (the fame!) and it has become the ‘must-take’ supplement for so many of you. Florassist Oral Hygiene is right up there too and I have no doubt that Florassist Throat Health will be as successful as the other two.

Florassist Throat Health is a unique oral probiotic providing beneficial bacteria clinically shown to help support throat health. For those of you who need to know these things, one lozenge contains 20 mg of BLIS K12, a proprietary oral probiotic known as S. salivarius K12, which delivers 2 billion colony-forming units. These organisms survive naturally in the throat, maximising their potential to promote throat health by helping to ease inflammation and inhibit the damage caused by unfavourable organisms that originate there.

It is naturally flavoured with spearmint and cherry and we recommend this for all throat infections, which currently seem to be affecting so many of us, or you can take this on an ongoing basis. Whichever way, it is a completely brilliant supplement and I promise you that I wouldn’t write about it if it wasn’t. Bravo Florassist!

Eye Pressure Support

I often write about eye products because there are numerous eye-related health concerns, including macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome and glaucoma, where preventative action may help reduce the risk of deteriorating eye health.

Glaucoma is an eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects your eye to your brain, becomes damaged and it can lead to loss of vision if not detected and treated. It usually occurs when the fluid in the eye fails to drain properly, which subsequently increases the pressure inside the eye, putting pressure on the optic nerve. Although a very common condition, it is difficult to diagnose because it doesn’t always cause symptoms in its early stages.

So please allow me to introduce you to Eye Pressure Support with Mirtogenol, which contains a blend of ingredients to help support fluid pressure in healthy eyes. Mirtogenol contains extracts from European bilberry and French Maritime pine bark that have been used to help inhibit an increase in fluid pressure inside the ocular chamber, lowering the risk of experiencing glaucoma and/or age-related vision problems. Preventative eye health wrapped.

Restoring Optimal Gut Health

The health of our gut is the cornerstone to our wellbeing and our digestive system plays an important role in the function of the human body. The digestive system consists of numerous organs such as the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, rectum and anus. The cells lining the digestive system secrete a fluid that aids in the digestion of food, whilst the muscles along the tract ensure that food is moved until it is finally excreted. Two additional glands, the liver and the pancreas, play an important role in digestion by releasing digestive fluids, which enter the intestines through small tubes or ducts.

With so many factors attacking the health of the gut, it would appear to be almost impossible to maintain or restore optimal gut health. Healing the gut lining will allow you to enhance immunity, improve digestion, reduce food intolerances and help to improve bowel movement. All we need do is follow the four ‘R’s’; remove, repair, replenish and replace:

Remove: This involves removing foods that we know can damage or cause inflammation within the gut such as alcohol, caffeine, dairy products, processed and sugar-laden foods. Unless you are iron-willed, this may be difficult so a reduction in weekly intake would help.

Repair: Repairing the gut is crucial to help heal the damaged lining of the gut walls. The amino acid l-glutamine constitutes more than 20% of amino acid levels in the body, signifying its importance. The gastrointestinal tract is the greatest user of glutamine in the body and the cells lining the gut use glutamine as their principal source of energy. Studies indicate that glutamine improves the gut barrier function and minimises the chances of a leaky gut. We recommend L-Glutamine by Lamberts.
L-Glutamine by Lamberts £13.60 for 90 Capsules

Replenish: We recommend taking a broad spectrum probiotic such as Mega Probiotic ND. This non-dairy supplement contains eight strains of beneficial bacteria, providing the bacteria species that can colonise the entire gastrointestinal tract. Scientists estimate that a good gut should contain 85% of beneficial bacteria. Mega-Probiotic to the rescue!
Mega-Probiotic ND £19 for 60 Capsules

Replace: Digestive enzyme production is crucial and ageing results in lower production of digestive enzymes. These enzymes are important because they break down food groups such as carbohydrates, protein and fats. Their efficient action of breaking down food means that more nutrients are available to the body. We recommend Enhanced Super Digestive Enzymes because they also contain enzymes that naturally have an anti-inflammatory effect in the gut. Inflammation equals ageing, in all things.

NeckPerfect Complex by iS Clinical

It has been absolutely ages since we launched a new product from iS Clinical, so here it is. NeckPerfect has been formulated to help transform your neck, jawline and décolleté to appear more lifted, tightened and defined. It gently exfoliates the skin, helping to diminish the appearance of fine lines, while improving skin tone and texture with continued use.

Blended with a potent combination of mixed fruit acids and White Willow Bark extract (source of Salicylic Acid), it also features botanical ingredients including Sweet Almond Seed extract to help enhance elasticity and Acacia Senegal Gum. As with most of the iS Clinical products, a little goes a long way and you will only need one or two pumps per application. So my LA boyfriends have done it again and I know this will make the iS Clinical fan-club contingent extraordinarily happy.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Seasonal Affective Disorder, also referred to as SAD, is a condition that affects over half a million people in the UK and impacts upon the mental wellbeing of people during the winter months, often peaking in February.

Sufferers of SAD often experience low mood, varied degrees of depression, loss of energy, sleep problems, irritability, increased appetite, strong cravings for carbohydrates and sweet foods, as well as headaches and muscle pain. The defining characteristics of SAD are that the symptoms return annually and disappear during the three other seasons of the year.

SAD can affect any age and gender, although it is more common in females and whilst the causal factor is not fully understood, it is clear that it is related to the amount of sunlight received. The body’s circadian rhythms are regulated by the amount of daylight and the lack of daylight during the winter months, which appears to have an effect on the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus plays a key role in numerous complex functions within our bodies, including hormone cycles, sleep and wake-up cycle times, as well as our emotional state.

All hormonal glands communicate with each other using hormones as chemical messengers. An imbalance in any hormone can therefore have a wide impact on the body. In the case of SAD, the hypothalamus, the adrenals and the brain are all interlinked through a complex series of chemical reactions, with the result of increased melatonin during the day leading to the feelings of lethargy, a lack of motivation and a reduction in the production of serotonin, which is the mood elevating chemical in the brain.

If you have a milder form of SAD, you may benefit greatly from the use of Magnolia Rhodiola Complex, which is our bestselling supplement for stress and anxiety issues. It contains a potent extract of magnolia, which works to physically relax muscles; magnolia extracts have been shown to help reduce levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. It is the increase in levels of cortisol in the body that prevents the uptake of the nerve-calming neuro-nutrient serotonin by the brain, so the benefits of taking this supplement are pretty fabulous.

Death of A Product

There is a certain inevitability that each month I need to tell you that yet another product has gone to product heaven. I really don’t know what is going on with manufacturers right now, but for those of you who have taken Essential Oil Formula religiously, I’m afraid I am going to have to switch you over to Omega Oils 3,6,9 (Gelatin Free). Au revoir.

News and Feedback

Right, let’s do news and feedback with a section from me to you at the end:

Wait lists are the bane of my life. As you all know, basically because I keep saying the same thing, wait lists make me miserable, but with the way things are at the moment, they appear to be the norm. It doesn’t make it any easier, but there are times when just about everything that can go wrong, goes wrong.

Stemm has been no exception, when we launched it, it sold out within 48 hours; we recovered from that drama and then we had an ongoing packaging issue with Gold Fulvic Conditioner for Blonde Hair. Finally it came into stock and then went straight out of stock again, but by the time you read this, we should be fully stocked; please don’t come looking for me if this hasn’t happened because I am running away tomorrow and turning my phone off!

Aside from the packaging issue, we sent Gold Fulvic back to the lab a few times for a few tweaks (actually the same is true for Black Fulvic Conditioner) and then we sent it out. Within 48 hours I received several emails from the blondes amongst you, all saying that the product is totally awesome and all saying that the ‘blonde uplift’ is pretty incredible; and then this. Nothing to add except my profound apologies for the wait:

‘I received my Stemm Collection on Tuesday and after only two uses can already see a difference in my hair. I think Stemm is sensational, tremendous, exciting, marvellous and miraculous. I know how stressful it has been for you having to wait for the packaging for the Gold Fulvic Conditioner, but all I can say is that it is well worth the wait’.

The Ordinary

So much feedback, so I’ve just chosen one to replicate here, which came with the heading ‘Tightened and Brightened Within An Inch of my Life’:

‘I have discovered a couple of hero products from The Ordinary that work practically instantaneously on older skin. I never go by what the product says it will do, only what I can see. Caffeine Solution – when you haven’t had enough rest, this really does work under the eyes to take away the greyness; I bought Niacinamide for my daughter’s troubled skin, but it also has a miraculous effect on the slight redness in my skin’.

Can I just say here, thank you to everybody for all the amazing emails you have sent about The Ordinary over the past five months; I always share them with Brandon and they mean so much to both of us. Launching The Ordinary has possibly been one of the most important and humbling experiences in both of our lives. For sure, with so much more to come, there are always going to be wait lists, I think it is in the DNA of the brand, so please bear with us because as I’ve written before, revolutions are never easy, but if The Ordinary serves in some small way to put transparency back into the beauty industry, we will endure.
Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG £5.80 for 30 ml; Niacinamide 10% + Zinc PCA 1% £5 for 30 ml

Short and sweet. Happy Birthday Flavanone Mud (FM). One-year this month. The first of the NIOD masques to be released, this is the one to use if your skin is congested and as an added bonus it takes down all inflammation. One year on and I am still completely hooked on FM and each time I put it on the excitement is still there, followed by the amazement when I rinse it off. Skincare Nirvana.

From Me To You

It goes something like this; over the next few months I will be writing about, and launching, several groundbreaking products and concepts with Brandon. Some of these you may know about, others I cannot tell you just yet, but just know from me that they are all in a class and league of their own.

As Brandon knows, I am no push-over when it comes to listing brands; I put him through the wringer (so enjoyable) and famously, or perhaps infamously, I chose NIOD over Hylamide and refused to list the first two generations of Inhibitif. Yes he loves me!

More seriously, we both believe that by the end of this year we will have virtually every aspect and category of beauty covered off; I have spent hours talking about this with Shabir because it actually changes everything, including our past support of niche brands. I know that I am not going to be loved by certain factions of the beauty industry for writing this, but I am constantly asked to list new brands, new products, new everything and I have had to say no to all of them because they are just not good enough on so many levels.

The journey is ongoing; we have no boundaries; I am indebted to Brandon and Prudvi for allowing me to help create products and for being gifted with full access to their lab. There is no greater privilege than being able to be a part of a remarkable movement where integrity, truth and honesty are paramount. We are all consumers, we hold hands and do this thing together.

Two more sections on health, this month’s feature articles and then the end bit:

The Best Mucoid Plaque Cleanser

Mucoid plaque is thought to be the body’s reaction in the lower intestines to toxins and chemicals from the foods we eat. The body has many natural defence mechanisms and a good example is why sites of injury swell up with fluid, which is basically to protect the insured tissues. Likewise, the ingestion of chemicals and toxins is thought to cause the release of mucus to help protect the cells within the intestines and forms plaque in the gut.

Although protective, this mucoid plaque may harbor parasites and pathogenic bacteria; it can stop the absorption of nutrients from food and it can slow the digestive process. It is thought that mucoid plaque may also be the cause of numerous other health concerns, such as allergies, food sensitivities, fatigue, low energy and constipation.

Shabir is a huge advocate of cleaning the gut gently to remove toxins, unwanted bacteria, parasites and waste matter that sits in the bowel area. To do this effectively, he prefers using a soluble and insoluble fibre supplement such as Complete Fiber Cleanse, taking two teaspoons in the morning and evening, preferably mixed into juice or water.

Complete Fiber Cleanse contains psyllium, fructo-oligosaccharides and other soluble and insoluble fibres to help healthy bowel function. Psyllium husk fibre is a jagged fibre rather like the teeth on a saw which scrapes the gut of any plaque that has adhered to the walls. Green foods, such as spirulina, work to help reduce inflammation and provide nutrients in a food state, whilst a probiotic blend delivers beneficial bacteria to replenish those lost through the removal of mucoid plaque.

Rosemary has had a long history of traditional use as a medicinal herb for a myriad of health concerns; Ancient Greek scholars wore rosemary garlands on their heads to improve memory and during the bubonic plague in Europe, rosemary was burned to purify the air and help prevent infection.

Although the anecdotal benefits of rosemary have been known throughout history, it is only recently that scientists have been investigating the herb in order to substantiate many claims. Two of the most researched compounds, rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid, have been found to help suppress inflammation and to possess antioxidant properties.

Shabir takes a detailed look at current research and various studies that have indicated that rosemary may be beneficial for numerous health concerns including infections, helping to prevent macular degeneration and a study indicating that rosemary may be beneficial for diabetics.

The End Bit

And so we come to the end of another newsletter; together with Shabir and the entire VH team, I want to thank you for your ongoing love, support and understanding, most especially when we have been hit really hard with several thousand orders within a very short space of time. We are doing our very best.

A personal thank you: Wayne, not enough words, but putting business on one side, you really are so very special and I am blessed to have you as a friend – let’s laugh forever.

I hope you all have a wonderful February and I’ll be back with the March newsletter, which will be rather interesting, if all goes according to plan!

With love
