Do Natural Deodorants Work?
The natural beauty industry is booming at the moment. More of us are looking to cleaner formulas that promise to be gentler on our skin and to the environment. As we switch to chemical-free face creams and vegan-friendly make-up, it’s unsurprising that even our choice of deodorant is getting a look-in.
First and foremost, let’s clarify the terminology. There is a difference between deodorant and antiperspirant. The former works as an antibacterial buffer to prevent and disguise the smell of sweat, whereas antiperspirants use aluminum to temporarily block your sweat glands. Admittedly most deodorants on the market use both techniques to prevent any hint of body odour escaping.
There is a longstanding debate as to whether the aluminum in traditional formulas can cause cell mutation, but so far research has proved inconclusive. Natural formulas don’t contain aluminum and work to reduce and mask the smell using antibacterial ingredients. While there are plenty of natural alternatives available, there are very few that offer the comfort and convenience of traditional formulas.
Dr Hauschka Sage Mint Deodorant Roll On, £11, utilises two of nature’s best antibacterial ingredients, witch hazel and sage mint. Conveniently, the formula dries super quickly and doesn’t leave a sticky, waxy film, so it’s perfect for the time-poor among us. Another brand to focus on natural antibacterial ingredients is Jason’s Soothing Aloe Vera Deodorant, £4.99. Grapefruit seed oil works to prevent smell developing, while aloe vera soothes your under arm area.
The scent alone is enough to convert you, but Aurelia’s Botanical Cream Deodorant, £18, also has the unusual and unexpected benefit of improving the look and feel of your armpit. After a few days of use you’ll notice that your under arm area feels smoother and softer. An almond-size amount of the cream is enough for both arms and keeps you protected all day.
While natural deodorants aren’t necessarily for everyone, it’s definitely a category worth exploring if you’re inspired by the clean beauty movement.
