An Acne-Busting Injection Is On Its Way

An Acne-Busting Injection Is On Its Way

Late last summer scientists revealed that they were one step closer to creating an injection to could help cure acne. Researchers at the University of California unveiled their approach in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology following a small scale study.

“Once validated by a large-scale clinical trial, the potential impact of our findings is huge for the hundreds of millions of individuals suffering from acne vulgaris,” explained lead investigator Chun-Ming Huang to Science Daily. “Current treatment options are often not effective or tolerable for many of the 85 percent of adolescents and more than 40 million adults in the United States who suffer from this multi-factorial cutaneous inflammatory condition. New, safe, and efficient therapies are sorely needed.”

The injection will target the toxin secreted from propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a bacteria that lives on the surface of your skin. The toxin causes inflammation and those painful, little red spots. Scientists believe that antibodies could help stop this toxin leak and therefore prevent the inflammation.

With the injection still a while off, what can you use right now to soothe inflammation and ease your breakouts?

The cleanser: Acne Deep Pore Cleansing Wash by Derma E

It can be tempting to go overboard with scrubs and acids when you’re suffering with a breakout in a bid to get rid of any excess oil. However, this can dry out your skin and cause your oil glands to go into overdrive. Derma E’s specially formulated cleanser helps to clean and rebalance.

The quick fix: Spot Control Gel by 31st State

We’ve all had it when we’ve woken up with a sore, inflamed spot on the middle of our forehead. While a lot of on-to-spot treatments tend to dry out the blemish and the surrounding skin, which can exacerbate the problem, 31st State’s is gentle but effective. With a blend of witch hazel, tea tree and zinc, the gel helps to fight the bacteria and inflammation. If you travel regularly it’s worth checking out the brand’s Overnight Clearing Pads as well.

The supplement: Clear Skin Complex by Viridian

If acne breakouts is a regular concern for you, it might be worth taking an inside-out approach. Clear Skin Complex contains a unique blend of burdock root, zinc and probiotics to help maintain healthy skin and reduce that all-important inflammation in the skin.

The kit: For Acne Kit by GoW

A straightforward, balanced skincare routine is fundamental to healthy skin. With this in mind, Shabir created three GoW kits, including one for acne-prone skin. While the Niacinamide Serum helps to refine your pores and strengthen your skin’s barrier, the Hyaluronic Acid Serum hydrates and Salicylic Acid 2% Serum exfoliates and unblocks pores, preventing blackheads.

The aftermath: Azelaic Acid by GoW

When it comes to acne a lot of the focus is often on preventing and easing breakouts, but once you’ve solved that you can be left with scarring. Employing an azelaic acid serum helps to ease scars as it’s not just a good anti-inflammatory, but it also increases cell turnover. Shabir regularly recommends this followed by a nourishing Rosehip Oil.
